Vineria Cozzi (BG)
In the characteristic Bergamo Alta, a small traditional restaurant run by the Milionario Magnati family that has maintained intact the charm of its birth year: 1848 as the first tobacco and deli shop in the city.
Vineria Cozzi is located in the heart of the wonderful town of Bergamo Alta, whose sixteenth-century defensive walls built by the Serenissima Republic of Venice became a UNESCO heritage site in 2017 (which can be reached by funicular from Bergamo Bassa).
Its suggestive entrance, with dark red boiserie and windows typical of nineteenth-century shops, is an invitation to cross the threshold and admire the first room of the restaurant that preserves the original furnishings and decorations intact, such as the beautiful counter, once used for serving wine, the wooden tables and the Thonet-style chairs reminiscent of French bistros.
Bergamo has a panorama of unparalleled beauty with the most beautiful walk in northern Italy.
(Adolfo Stahr, German writer and historian)
First license for deli and tobacco in Bergamo Alta, the place then became the after-theater eatery of the nearby Teatro Sociale and, since the late 80s, it has been managed by Francesca Milionario and the family of her daughter Simona Magnati who, a passionate cook, coordinates the cuisine and the hospitality.
Everything at Vineria Cozzi speaks of love for the territory, first of all in its menu that varies according to the seasons and draws on artisan suppliers who are mostly possible local and sustainable. Like the Azienda Agricola Massimo Balduzzi of Clusone in Valseriana that supplies the Pecora Gigante Bergamasca (sheep), always on the menu, slow-cooked with potato cream.
And then the many delicious specialties of Bergamo, such as the unmissable homemade pasta casoncelli or maltagliati with porcini mushrooms, egg with fondue, black truffle, polenta and Parmesan cheese cannolo, and polentina with cheese fondue and mushrooms.
The wine list is very well stocked, with 300 labels, with a particular focus on the Lombardy region and organic and natural products.
Vineria Cozzi is also famous for another peculiarity: its take-away picnic baskets.
Available every day upon reservation, at noon and in the evening, the baskets contain 1 baguette of your choice, Panzanella bread, egg, popcorn, dessert and water, and are fully equipped (fabric napkins, tablecloth, glasses, cutlery, towel), perfect for a day exploring the city.
In winter it is beautiful to eat in the vintage entrance hall, while in summer you can opt for the dehors set up next door overlooking Via Colleoni.
Certainly one of the most evocative historic venues in Italy.
The Secret
Adding to the charm of Vineria Cozzi are certainly the beautiful illustrations of its corporate image. A collaboration born by chance when the artist Antonio Bonanno was moving to Bergamo and, having discovered the place, he created the refined nineteenth-century characters with the technique of ink hatching and digital color that we see today in the menu and promotional cards.
