Rubber ducks are, in fact, a global pop icon and the most collected toy in the world. Their popularity derives from a series of fortunate events. In the 1970s they were introduced to the general public by Jim Henson, the voice actor of the Muppet Ernie who on the popular television show Sesame Street spoke to Duckie, his little duck.
In 2001, the British tabloid The Sun published the news that Queen Elizabeth of England had been seen with a rubber duck wearing a crown in her bathroom and, since then, a global phenomenon linked to their collecting was born which has also resulted in the opening of dozens of Duck Stores around the world.
The Secret
Among other curious events, in 1992 a cargo ship lost thousands of these ducks at sea and the episode became famous thanks to the work of Curtis Ebbesmeyer and James Ingraham, two American oceanographers, who monitored their path by studying the tides.
