Matilde Boutique Hotel is the latest addition to the world created by the entrepreneur Giuseppe Gatto, who left twenty years old from a small town in Sicily to make his fortune in Milan in the 70s. And who would have said that Giuseppe would not only have been successful, venue after venue, but that he would even acquire one of the symbols of Milanese cultural life, the legendary Savini restaurant in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the center of the city’s social life since 1867.

Today Giuseppe is joined by his son Sebastian who, in addition to following the various restaurants of the group between Italy and London, had the idea of using what were vacant offices in a beautiful building in Via Spadari to transform them into a small hotel with only 25 rooms where you can really feel at home. Thus, in 2020, Matilde was born, from the name of his little girl, which Sebastian wanted to create in a style that evoked that of the Belle Époque.

Starting with the marvelous chandelier in the hall that comes right from the London Savini al Criterion in Piccadilly Circus. The crystal lighting, the burnished brass finishes, the velvets of the curtains and the beds with particular capitonnée work on the headboards, the white Carrara marble bathrooms with iron-glass deco fixtures pay homage to the golden age of Savini, while all the original details of the building, from the beautiful wrought iron staircase to the floors, have been finely restored.

The real gem are the rooms, primarily the Presidential Suite on the sixth floor with two private terraces and the Deluxe suites, which offer an original view of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and the Madonnina del Duomo. Impossible not to give in to the temptation to take the inevitable photo from the small balcony against the backdrop of the symbols of Milan.

Breakfast, served until 10.30, is held on the first floor in a reserved room of the Granaio Caffè & Cucina, a bistro restaurant part of the same group. Everything is homemade (very fresh produced every day in the Monza laboratory) with particular attention to the products of the land of origin of the Gatto family, Sicily, including its excellent citrus fruits, oil, stuffed brioches, such as the yummy one with pistachio cream heart.

And for a delicious sweet or savory afternoon break, you can also stop at Matilde Bakery, the small bistro, part of the Gatto’s group, open in nearby via Orefici.

The Secret

Ask for the teddy bear with a green t-shirt by Matilde, the hotel’s mascot, which is given to the children staying in the hotel and will soon be available for purchase.
